NSA Commends Navy Over Clampdown On Illegal Maritime Security Outfits

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) has commended the efforts of the Nigerian Navy (NN) at curbing the activities of illegal maritime security outfits.

In a letter of commendation to the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the NSA acknowledged the efforts of the NN at denying illegal maritime security outfits freedom of action and operation.

A statement by the director of Information Commodore Suleiman Dahun for the Chief of Navy Staff recalled that the Nigerian Navy Ship JUBILEE recently raided and sealed an illegal institution, the Merchant Seaman Academy at Ikot  Ataudo, Uwa West in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State. He noted that during the raid it was discovered that students of the institution wear uniforms that bear resemblance to those of the NN and undergo dubious maritime training.

He added that the raid led to the arrest of one Mr Adam Pius who is the institution’s  proprietor as well as three of his staff and 19 students who were subsequently  handed over to the Nigeria Police for prosecution.

“The NN is closely monitoring the activities of the Merchant Seaman Academy and other illegal maritime security outfits with a view to enforcing the proscription order of the Office of the National Security Adviser,” he said. He therefore called on members of the public not to fall prey to any of these illegal maritime security outfits.
